ITMAP for Endpoint Protection platforms
Endpoint protection is the market for software that prevents, detects and responds to attacks on user devices and servers through a vendor-owned agent governed from a single management console, delivered as SaaS or on-premises and licensed per endpoint or per user.
Capability scope: signature and machine-learning malware prevention; exploit, ransomware and fileless-attack blocking; device, application and host firewall controls; continuous behavioural telemetry; detection, investigation and threat hunting; and response actions including host isolation, process termination, file quarantine and rollback. Coverage must span Windows, macOS and Linux.
Buying driver: replacing legacy antivirus and fragmented point tools with one agent that stops commodity malware automatically and gives analysts enough visibility to contain targeted intrusions quickly.
Evaluation criteria: prevention efficacy and false-positive rate, depth of detection and response, agent footprint and stability, operating-system breadth, management simplicity, multi-tenant support for service providers, openness of telemetry to other security tools, and quality of vendor threat research.
Buyer: CISOs, security operations leads and IT operations teams, from mid-market to large enterprise, plus public-sector agencies with sovereignty requirements and managed service providers buying on behalf of clients.
Exclusions: unified endpoint management, patching and vulnerability scanning sold without a protection engine; mobile-only threat defence; cloud workload protection limited to servers and containers; consumer antivirus; managed detection services whose agent cannot be licensed separately; MSP platforms reselling another vendor’s engine; complementary layers such as moving-target defence or application isolation that sit beside, not replace, the primary agent; and SIEM or XDR analytics platforms without a native endpoint agent.
